Media Day: India approaches the Taliban Nuclear Crisis with strength and confidence
Today, a ‘Media Day’ was held where the countries of the United Nations met with the media to answer any questions or concerns. India approached today as an opportunity to express the progress made by the United Nations and to convey India’s complete focus and efforts of the situation. India has placed troops on and closed the Indian-Pakistani border while the United Kingdom has placed troops on the Afghani-Pakistani border. In addition, Pakistan has successfully surrounded the Swat Valley with Pakistani military troops. India has suggested that the countries do not bomb the Swat Valley because bombing could possibly detonate the weapons. Furthermore, India recognizes the humanitarian issue of killing innocent people in the Swat Valley. The population there is about 1.2 million—and most of them are not even involved at all. Not only would the weapons kill the innocent people in the Swat Valley, but the factor of radiation must also be considered. People in the Punjab region, both in India (24 million people) and Pakistan (82 million people), and the North West Frontier Province will be exposed to the radiation if this happens. India does not want to negotiate with the Taliban because it does not recognize the Taliban as a legitimate entity. India supports Pakistan’s giving the Taliban the ultimatum of giving up the weapons by Friday and leaving in peace, however if the Taliban does not hand them over before then, then we suggest that the military invade the Swat Valley and confiscate the weapons in addition to dealing very harshly with the members of the Taliban. Should Pakistan require India’s military support we shall give it to them. We are also willing to give them any logistical needs, like monitoring communication within the Taliban. India will not enter Pakistan and will not violate its sovereignty. We are not taking this situation lightly. India is taking action with strength, confidence and with the knowledge that the Taliban will be dealt with.
